Franklin High School students spend every day on campus, and we are so caught up in our paths to getting to class that we don’t realize there are hidden gems everywhere. Do you know about the school Garden?
Here at Franklin, we have a garden now thanks to two teachers and their students.
FHS middle school English teachers Savannah Jones and Carmen Lopez and their students worked on a project last year to renovate the garden courtyard of the Media Center.
The book “Farewell To Manzanar” was the inspiration to start the gardening project. The book is about a seven-year-old Japanese girl who is in an internment camp in 1945. She lives in poor conditions, and she makes it better by creating gardens.
On Jan 26, 2024, the Buzz posted “FHS Middle Schoolers Beautified Media Center Garden,” which is where all stories are posted about great things happening in Franklin. Lopez and Jones noticed that the media center garden area was not used and wanted to change that.
Once able to start the project, they needed supplies and their students needed to write letters to businesses asking for plant donations.
They would then need to research plants to see what would grow best in the media center, and then they were expecting the plants to arrive. This project is a learning experience where their students were able to explore by hand and do research about plants while having fun.
Jones said that the students are allowed to use the garden space whenever they want; the door is always open. Lopez added that the garden is mostly taken care of by the librarian now, but she likes to go at least once a week to check up on it. Jones and Lopez both said they want all students to use the space to study or to just chill out.
