A new club at Franklin High School is bringing Latin culture to life. This club, called the Latin Music Club, was formed by FHS guitar teacher Paul Lerma and mariachi teacher Angelica Serrano. Lerma and Serrano made this new club because the majority of FHS is Latino/Hispanic, and students have asked for a club for Latin music. This also provides students with the opportunity to play their favorite songs and express themselves through music.

Serrano and Lerma will introduce students to various Latin music styles through hands-on learning. No prior experience is needed, as members will receive instruction. Students benefit from accessible learning, the opportunity to try new instruments, and support from Lerma and Serrano, who provide all materials.

According to Lerma and Serrano, LMC will also hold performances in the future for rallies, Hallowfest, HOCO, and other school-related festivals. Another thing, the LMC will hold meetings every Tuesday and Friday in A218 or A217. These meetings will begin after school and will offer hands-on practice with 12 and six-string guitars, stand-up bass, drums, and trumpets.

The LMC has a goal in mind: for students to learn something new and experience all types of Latin music. Serrano’s 20 years of experience in Latin music and Lerma’s broad instrumental background make both of them more than qualified. One of Lerma’s clubs, the Modern Band Club, performed from 6-8 p.m. on Dec.10 in the FHS auditorium. There were multiple performances led by all three FHS music teachers: Serrano, Lerma and Ian Krik, the orchestra, piano, and choir teacher.
