Since last year, problems such as fights, traffic, and students throwing objects at cars have been seen frequently at Franklin High School bus stops. Bus drivers reported these problems to the Stockton Unified School District in an effort to seek solutions. This year, changes to the bus stop locations were made to improve safety, reduce traffic congestion, and manage student behavior more effectively between them. While the transition was confusing, the adjustments aim to create a more organized and efficient transportation system for both the students and the school.
According to Principal Anna Lotti, the Regional Transportation District (RTD) company that owns the city bus stops came up with a solution for FHS bus stops; they suggested that the bus stops be split up. Currently, the bus stop by B Building only has two specific routes, and the bus stop on Myrtle Street has several routes.
The change confused students, as they were not all informed. Parents were also unaware of the changes because the school only handles part of the transportation, as they are only in charge of paying RTD. Assistant Principal Claudia Solis clarified that school officials are not able to select the locations of bus stops.
Solis said RTD believed that relocating stops would help ease traffic and reduce the big crowds of students gathering in one place.
Splitting up student groups was seen as a way to prevent crowding and potential fights in tight spaces, not just with students but with adults intervening with students.
The new system is expected to be more cost-effective, meaning it won’t be expensive to pay, and the school can save more money for school events. FHS will have more yellow buses next year that can also save us money and won’t require a student ID like the city buses.
